RECORD

On stage with Lemon Grass at the 'Go Country Club' in Barnard Castle, County Durham

With Terry Mills, Malcolm Mason and Geoff Betsworth

In 1989 I made a record for charity. The idea was to raise funds for the Guide Dogs for the Blind. After a lot of hard work and personal appearances to promote the record we managed to raise more than £1,000 to buy a dog and I named it Dixie after my love for America's Deep South. The tracks on the record (Grass Roots GRR 101) are "There's A Tear In My Beer," "Two Good Friends" "Pick Me Up On Your Way Down" and "Hello Trouble."

The Cumbria-based trio Lemon Grass were kind enough to offer their expertise free of charge and provided the instrumental and vocal backing for me. On the opening track, which was originally a hit by Hank Williams and Hank Williams Junior, I asked Hartlepool booking agent and Hank Williams fan, Johnny Larkin, to guest with me. He did the Hank Williams senior part and I did junior's bit.

Thanks to the country music section of the Glaxo Sports and Social Club in Barnard Castle, a promotional night was held when the record was officially launched.

Lemon Grass featured Malcolm Mason on lead guitar and keyboards, Terry Mills on rhythm guitar and vocals with Geoff Betsworth on pedal steel guitar and Dobro with Mike Wilding on harmony vocals.

It was all worth it - thanks to the generosity of the public. A cheque for £1,000 is presented to the Middlesbrough Branch of the Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The Bradford and Bingley Building Society were kind enough to offer the king size cheque free of charge and the presentation was made in the Cleveland Centre, Middlesbrough.

The record was produced and engineered by Malcolm Mason at Lemon Grass Studios, Cumbria and mastered at Abbey Road Studios, London.

The record sleeve layout was sponsored by County-Print, Middlesbrough and special thanks to Lemon Grass, David Ward and W.H. Smith, Middlesbrough for their support.
